Which bike lock do you need for bike insurance?

You have purchased a new bike and want to take out bike insurance for it.

But how do you know which lock you need for bike insurance?

The exact requirements can be found in the policy conditions of the insurance company. Most insurers in The Netherlands require an ART2 approved bike lock. This means that a bike lock must be approved by the ART Foundation. Almost all insurers require a second lock that also has an ART2 certification. Neither of these two basic locks can be an insert chain.

The ART Foundation extensively tests all locks to determine if they are resistant to theft. During this test, they check if the lock is resistant to sawing and cutting. They also test if the lock still functions when it freezes. Finally, machines are used to test the strength of the lock. If a bike lock passes this test, it receives the ART 2-star certification. The ART Foundation approves all types of bike locks: ring locks, insert chains, chain locks, folding locks, and U-locks.

An approved bike lock does not guarantee against theft, but it does ensure that the risk of theft significantly decreases. In addition to using an approved lock, it is important to properly lock your bike. You can read all our tips on this page.
